news: Vision Led Planning: How to Plan Development and Transport Infrastructure More Sustainably
Wednesday 30th April 2025
ITP’s Nicola Lodge has co-authored a new guide, “Vision-Led Planning: How to Plan Development and Transport Infrastructure More Sustainably”, a collaborative publication designed to inspire more sustainable approaches to development.
Produced in partnership with the Centre for Transport and Society at the University of the West of England, Bristol; Jon Parker Consultancy; Transport for Quality of Life; and partners, the guide was created without external funding. It has been endorsed by both the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT) and the Transport Planning Society.
This guide is intended to help plan development and transport infrastructure by using an approach that limits road construction and car travel – an approach that helps grow prosperity; meets decarbonisation objectives; and delivers more sustainable, accessible, equitable and healthy communities.
The guide challenges the traditional ‘predict and provide’ approach to transport planning, considers how can we do it differently, and illustrates the art of the possible with short case studies of ‘car-free’ and ‘car-light’ developments from across the UK. It is intended to assist anyone involved in the planning, design, or delivery of development and transport infrastructure planning.
This can help achieve the Government’s five missions to secure prosperity, reach net zero, and improve safety, opportunities and health.
