Travel Plans

ITP has worked with over 500 clients to implement successful Travel Plans at hospitals, offices, residential developments, sports stadia, rail stations, business parks and holiday destinations.

Whether voluntary or planning-led, our Travel Plans all aim to minimise traffic congestion and environmental impact, while improving public health through active travel.

Travel Plans

We have been at the forefront of delivering and evaluating Travel Plans since 1998. In this time we have worked with some of the UK's largest employers, football clubs and leisure companies to develop action plans that improve car park management, public transport connections, cycle parking, and shower & changing facilities.

Our approach combines site-specific investments and transport service improvements with information targeted at site occupiers. Hands-on experience ensures we appreciate what approaches and initiatives can successfully encourage adoption of sustainable travel behaviours across different locations and contexts.

BT Adastral Park

Adastral Park is a world-leading centre for telecomms innovation that houses 4,000 staff and BT’s global R&D headquarters. Plans to expand the research park and create a new residential community comprising 2,000 homes, a primary school, learning hub, hotel and community facilities led BT to appoint ITP to develop a Travel Plan and Transport Assessment to support a planning application.

We constructed a microsimulation model to assess traffic impacts and completed preliminary engineering designs for local junction & highway improvements. Uniquely we were asked to implement the Travel Plan before submitting a planning application, to demonstrate its ability to influence existing site users' travel patterns. Over two-years we helped BT achieve a 5%-point reduction in the number of people travelling to Adatral Park by car.

Travel Plans Maylands On The Move

Maylands on the Move

Dacorum Borough Council commissioned ITP to deliver Maylands on the Move - a workplace travel engagement programme at Maylands Business Park in Hemel Hempstead, the largest of its kind in the eastern region.

We developed and implemented a tailored business engagement strategy, a multi-channel marketing and communications plan, and engaged with 80+ organisation to help them develop travel action plans.

Our work achieved a 10%-point reduction in single occupancy vehicle use, achieved through increased car sharing and bus journeys.

Ely Station Interchange

Ely sits at a strategic point on East Anglia’s rail network, with passenger numbers growing rapidly through increased commuter travel to Cambridge, London and Peterborough. The station’s interchange facilities are under increasing pressure, with a low bridge and level-crossing complicating station access.

We worked with East Cambs District Council and Abellio Greater Anglia to scope potential improvements to station interchange facilities. We reviewed the existing evidence base, modelled accessibility to/from the site, and undertook surveys with users and non users of the station.  Focus group discussions helped us build a detailed understanding of local station access needs, while visioning workshops informed priority improvements.

Our action plan resulted in delivery of enhanced car and cycle parking, signage and wayfinding, and bus stopping arrangements at the station.
