Road Safety
Safety is an important factor in how we use the road regardless of the purpose of the journey or mode of transport used. ITP’s road safety work complements our work in other fields, giving us a rounded, holistic approach to transport projects. We fully support the current UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, and have undertaken a number of road safety projects in the UK, the Middle East and Africa.

Review of road safety education, Northern Ireland – Working in association with TRL, ITP undertook a review of the Road Safety Officer Education Service and provided ad hoc advice and guidance, on behalf of the Department of Environment in Northern Ireland. The aim of the review was to make recommendations for the future provision of effective road safety services which aim to change behaviour and attitudes. This can be done through such activities as supporting road safety education in schools, adult education, developing practical road user skills through training programmes, providing information and raising awareness of road safety issues.
Cheshire East road safety strategy - ITP was appointed by Cheshire East Council to develop an evidence-led road safety strategy to support their emerging third Local Transport Plan. The work involved a review of existing casualty data, interrogation of casualty factors, examination of the existing work programme, comparisons of the existing work programme against the casualty problems, stakeholder interviews / workshops, and a review of best practice. The resultant strategy provided an action plan and framework for on-going investment in road safety.
Road safety education strategy, Qatar – Working with TRL, AECOM and Vicroads, ITP was commissioned to develop a road safety education, training and publicity action plan as part of a wider transport strategy for Ashghal in Qatar. The action plan provides practical recommendations aimed at ensuring a comprehensive programme of education for those road users most at risk of death or injury, starting with school curriculum based activity and moving through to awareness raising for older road users.
Review of road safety management capacity, Nigeria - The World Bank commissioned ITP to undertake a review of road safety management capacity in Nigeria. This review was undertaken in accordance with the operational guidance contained within the Global Road Safety Facility Guidelines which specifies a high-level systematic approach towards achieving a multi-sectoral framework. Our deliverables included a long-term multi-sectoral investment strategy and the identification of short-term projects to implement the strategy in order to overcome revealed weaknesses in road safety management capacity.
Review of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) operations, Nigeria - ITP assisted RoadSafe in reviewing FRSC's day to day operations. The review included a SWOT analysis of the organisation’s effectiveness in addressing road safety from Federal Government level to working with individual road users. This covered issues such as policy, legislation, data collection and analysis, enforcement, traffic control, education, stakeholder engagement and public relations. Following on from ITP's Road Safety Management Capacity review of Nigeria, our road safety experts provided technical support to ensure accuracy and consistency with the existing national policy and delivery model for road safety.
Road safety strategy development and implementation, Saudi Arabia - ITP worked alongside TSTN Ltd to review the performance of the outgoing 5-year road safety strategy for Riyadh against pre-determined indicators to assess the success of implementation. Following this review we assisted in developing a further 5-year strategy that provided a realistic and achievable way of achieving significant casualty reductions. The strategy covered all aspects of road safety, including safety auditing, collision investigation, emergency services and infrastructure design. The Riyadh project continued ITP’s work in the Kingdom, following the development of a road safety strategy and action plan for Saudi’s Eastern Province, where ITP took the lead on road safety education.
School crossing patrol risk assessment workshop – ITP delivered a practical workshop for School Crossing Patrol Co-ordinators across London. This provided training and guidance on appropriately assessing and managing risks associated with delivering a school crossing patrol service to ensure that risk levels are reduced to ‘as low as reasonably practicable’. Delegates came away from the workshop with an updated understanding of UK health and safety legislation, a hazard checklist to be used as an aide memoir, and the skills to appropriately evaluate risk levels.
