Car Sharing and Car Clubs
Project Experience
Department for Transport - Research into the effectiveness of car sharing and car clubs. ITP led this major DfT research project, culminating in the publication of best practice guidance. the study involved the examination of over 500 case studies, and detailed site interviews with 30 of the UK's leading sites to explore the factors that influence success at the local level. The work has been strongly praised throughout the profession, and ITP have continued to be advocates of both car sharing and car clubs, and regularly present at national and international seminars on this subject.
Worcester City Car Club - ITP undertook a study on behalf of Worcestershire County Council into the feasibility of a car club to support the sustainable Travel Towns demonstration project. The work included a technical assessment of delivery options, including site audits and recommendations for procurement options. It was supported by a detailed business case, and has provided the platform for the development of an innovative approach to delivery which takes a migratory path by utilising the existing County Council fleet of vehicles to launch with a critical mass of corporate and personal users.
MetroCentre and Lakeside Car Sharing - ITP in partnership with Richard Armitage have undertaken a detailed study into the delivery of an innovative and pioneering car sharing scheme to capture trips to these major shopping complexes. With over 20,000 free car parking spaces, 15,000 staff and 700 employers, the challenge has been to create a suitable blend of 'carrots' and 'sticks' to influence staff travel behaviour, combined with an extensive marketing campaign.
Worcestershire County Council Car Sharing - ITP have worked alongside the County Council to actively promote car sharing for employees of the Council. the scheme is supported by on-site car sharing spaces and a sophisticated matching database and ITP's involvement has been to steer the staff engagement process to capture new sharers, and to ensure the management team adopt the principles of car sharing within the overall operation of the organisation.
